Horand became the center of the breeding program, and was bred with dogs with good characteristics from other members. Despite giving birth to many puppies, its most prominent puppy is Hektor von Schwaben. Hektor was bred with Horand’s other puppies and gave birth to Beowulf, who later gave birth to a total of 84 puppies, mostly through mating with Hektor’s other descendants.
Dogs from Beowulf were also crossbred, and from its descendants born the German Shepherd Dog. It is believed that the association’s success was largely due to Von Stephanitz’s strong, uncompromising leadership, and he was thus the birthplace of the German Shepherd Dog line.
