Seashell Cross Surrounded By Your Glory What Will My Heart Feel Will I Dance For You I Can Only Imagine CanvasAs compared to other materials, canvas is less resistant to abrasion and mildew and therefore should be treated with extra care during storage and shipping. Extreme temperatures can damage cotton canvas and even fabric canvas. Canvas should not be exposed to chemicals as these can alter the colour of the painting surface and discolor paintings. Canvases are also vulnerable to water damage and must be dried after each use.
There are three main types of stretched canvas available; Gesso, fibreboard and stretcher bars. Gesso is a type of gluey canvas, where a resin like substance is applied to the painting surface, the edges of which are stapled or glued to another piece of canvas after it has been stretched. This creates the impression of a flatter canvas. The most common colours for Gesso canvases are black, dark brown and charcoal. Gesso is the most expensive type of canvas available. Some artists prefer this because it allows them greater creative freedom and control over the final appearance of their paintings.
Fibreboards are made by stretching thick boards of cotton fabric, with a wooden frame. They are widely used to create large paintings that are then readily available for sale. The frames can be easily damaged, so painting with fiberboard is not recommended for inexperienced painters. They are available in a wide variety of colours.
